I didn't realize this was a short story when I grabbed it from my recommended list on Kindle Unlimited. It is short, and I wish it continued deeper into their lives, but so be it.
Paige's job is to execute her target and slip out unseen. She doesn't expect to find the target's young daughter in the house. She's supposed to leave no witnesses, but she draws the line at executing a child. She abandons her mission, knowing it will upset her employer. Tomorrow night will have to work.
The problem deepens a day later when not only is the child still there, but there's also a person from her past who's going to complicate things.
I'm a fan of Lisa Unger's writing, but this one missed the mark for me. It built steadily and had me on the edge of my seat, but then it ended too abruptly for my liking. I get it's a short story, but I hate the slow build and rushed end. I wish it were a full novel.
